The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) welcomes the decision of the President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov to approve the International Cooperation Roadmap for 2023-2024 to explore Turkmenistan's accession to the Global Methane Commitment.  This was stated by the Director of the UNECE Sustainable Energy Department, Dario Liguti, speaking at the plenary session of the International Conference “Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan-2023”, which began on Wednesday in Ashgabat.

Dario Liguti invited Turkmenistan to take part in the global methane forum, which will be held in Geneva on March 18-20, 2024.  Within the framework of the forum, it is planned to hold a round table to discuss measures to reduce methane emissions in Central Asia.

The forum aims to promote progress in methane abatement and mobilize action to further make progress in reducing methane emissions.  The event will be organized by UNECE and the Global Methane Initiative in partnership with the Global Methane Center and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition.

In his speech, Liguti focused on key government programs developed by the government of Turkmenistan, including the Presidential Program for Socio-Economic Development for 2022-2028, the Law on Renewable Energy Sources of Turkmenistan, adopted in 2021, and the Hydrogen Energy Roadmap for 2022-2028.  2023.

According to him, UNECE is ready to engage with Turkmenistan to implement this regulatory framework to create partnership opportunities for all stakeholders.  And in this context, two interrelated areas can become the main areas of mutual efforts and partnership.

The UNECE representative emphasized that these high, ambitious goals will provide future opportunities for the country's social development, and UNECE is ready to cooperate with the government of Turkmenistan and all stakeholders to achieve these goals.
