The Malaysian Prime Minister will soon pay an official visit to Turkmenistan. Preparations for this major diplomatic event were discussed at a digital Cabinet meeting on June 12.

As reported by TDH, Vice-Chairman and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov reported on preparations for the Malaysian Prime Minister's official visit to Ashgabat at the government meeting.

The Vice-Chairman noted that Malaysia is one of Ashgabat's oldest and key partners in the Asia-Pacific region. Diplomatic relations between the countries were established in 1992, and the bilateral legal framework currently comprises more than forty documents.

The upcoming talks aim to elevate the interstate dialogue to a qualitatively new level, cementing the strategic agreements reached during President Serdar Berdimuhamedov's visit to Kuala Lumpur in December 2024.

After hearing the report, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov emphasized that cooperation between Turkmenistan and Malaysia is developing fruitfully, and instructed the Vice-Chairman and Minister of Foreign Affairs to properly prepare for the official visit of the Malaysian Prime Minister to strengthen interstate cooperation.

It is worth noting that the oil and gas sector is a key area of Turkmen-Malaysian economic cooperation. The Malaysian state-owned company PETRONAS (represented by its subsidiary PETRONAS Carigali (Turkmenistan) Sdn Bhd) is the oldest and one of the largest foreign partners in Turkmenistan's oil and gas sector. The company is successfully developing the offshore fields of Block 1 in the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea under the terms of a Production Sharing Agreement. Over 30 years of operation, the company has invested over $11.6 billion in Turkmenistan's oil and gas operations.
