Turkmengas: Turkmenistan successfully reduces methane emissions

At the International Forum on Attracting Foreign Investments into the Economy of Turkmenistan (TEIF 2025), held on April 23-24 in Kuala Lumpur, Deputy Chairman of the State Concern "Turkmengas" Myrad Archayev presented the country's strategy for sustainable development and energy transformation.

With one of the world's largest natural gas reserves, Turkmenistan seeks to use this resource with maximum efficiency, prioritizing environmental responsibility, Archayev noted. He emphasized that natural gas is a low-carbon fuel that can replace more polluting energy sources such as coal and oil.

The energy transition is not a rejection of traditional fuel, but its adaptation to new requirements of sustainable development, the speaker noted. "Turkmengas" is actively working on the monetization of natural gas to provide world markets with clean energy. The transition to less polluting fuels, such as natural gas, helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality.

Today, "Turkmengas" is implementing a large-scale project for the phased development of the world's largest onshore gas field, Galkynysh, whose proven gas reserves, together with the nearby Yashlar and Garakel fields, are estimated at more than 27 trillion cubic meters, the speaker continued.

One of Turkmenistan's main priorities is to reduce methane emissions. At the COP 28 summit, our country confirmed its commitment to the Global Methane Commitment by introducing modern methane monitoring and capture technologies. As part of international cooperation with the UN and UNEP, Turkmenistan has established a technical dialogue and developed roadmaps for 2023-2024 and 2025-2026 aimed at reducing global methane emissions by 30% by 2030 compared to 2020, Archayev said.

Since March 2024, the MARS digital platform has been implemented in partnership with UNEP, which analyzes satellite data on methane emission sources. According to the monitoring results from June 2024 to February 2025, zero emissions were recorded in a number of production departments, which was an important achievement.

According to the report of the independent international company Kayrros, since 2020, total methane emissions in Turkmenistan have decreased by 10%, despite the increase in production volumes, the speaker continued.

One of the striking examples of an environmentally responsible approach is the reduction in the intensity of gas combustion in the Darvaza crater, Archayev emphasized. Specialists from the Natural Gas Research Institute of the State Corporation Turkmengas have developed a program that is currently being successfully implemented.

In July 2024, observation well No. 11 was developed, providing an industrial inflow of low-pressure gas from a depth of 200 meters. Exploratory well No. 12, taken out of conservation, yielded an influx of slightly gasified formation water, which confirmed control over filtration flows and gas recharge of the crater. In December 2024, drilling of well No. 4 was completed, which provides a gas inflow of about 600,000 cubic meters per day. An increase in the rate of gas collection is expected in the near future due to the commissioning of additional wells.

Satellite data show that the intensity of the crater combustion has decreased by more than half. This experience demonstrates that competent resource management can not only increase efficiency, but also minimize the impact on the environment, Archayev noted.

In his speech, he emphasized that Turkmenistan is open to cooperation with international partners who share the goals of energy transformation and environmental responsibility. The country is actively implementing the obligations of the Paris Agreement, the National Strategy on Climate Change and the UN Framework Convention, coordinating its actions with global initiatives.

Turkmenistan is not just a fuel supplier.  We are a reliable partner offering not only resources, but also stability, transparent conditions and a long-term energy strategy, Archayev noted.
