Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan and Adviser to the President of the United States discussed the situation in Afghanistan

 Regional security issues and the situation in Afghanistan were discussed on Thursday by Turkmen Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov and US Homeland Security Adviser Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, the website of the Foreign Ministry of Turkmenistan reports.

 The parties discussed key aspects of the Turkmen-American cooperation, in particular, on security issues.  In this context, the importance of bilateral and multilateral interaction mechanisms aimed at countering modern threats and challenges in the region and beyond was emphasized, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry notes.

 An exchange of views took place on the situation in Afghanistan, which is a direct neighbor of Turkmenistan.

 Meredov outlined the position of the Turkmen side on promoting the peace process in Afghanistan through political and diplomatic efforts.  In this regard, the minister informed about the progress in the implementation of joint projects with the Afghan side of a socio-economic and humanitarian nature.

 In this vein, the parties exchanged views on intensifying the activities of the «Turkmenistan-USA-Afghanistan» format to achieve concrete results.

 The meeting was also attended by the US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad.
