Iran is ready to continue sending Turkmen gas to Azerbaijan through its territory. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi stated this on Wednesday at a meeting with President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov, the Iranian news agency IRNA reported.
Bilateral high-level talks with the President of Iran were held in the capital of Turkmenistan, where Raisi arrived to participate in the 6th Caspian Summit held on June 29.
Stating that Iranian-Turkmen relations are rapidly expanding based on the development of good neighborly ties and mutual trust, Raisi added that the implementation of memorandums of understanding and cooperation documents signed by the two states during Serdar Berdimuhamedov's recent visit to Tehran will accelerate the expansion of cooperation.
Raisi also noted that, in accordance with Azerbaijan's recent request, Tehran is ready to increase the throughput of Turkmen gas supplies to Azerbaijan through its territory.
In early June, Azerbaijani Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov told reporters that since the beginning of 2022, Azerbaijan has imported 1.5 billion cubic meters of Turkmen gas through Iran.
Earlier, Iranian Oil Minister Javad Ovji told media that Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Iran had agreed to double the volume of natural gas exchanges as part of a deal reached in November 2021. He noted that the three countries had practically agreed on agreements to double the volume of natural gas exchange.
A trilateral agreement on the swap of Turkmen gas to Azerbaijan through Iran was signed on November 28, 2021 in Ashgabat on the sidelines of the 15th summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO). The implementation of the contract began on January 1, 2022. According to the document, Turkmenistan supplies 5-6 million cubic meters of gas per day to the northeastern regions of Iran, and Iran supplies the same amount of gas to Azerbaijan on its northwestern border.
