On Thursday, January 21, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov met with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev via videoconference, the website of the Foreign Ministry of Turkmenistan reports.

During the meeting, it was noted that the most important direction of the Turkmen-Azerbaijani cooperation is interaction in the Caspian Sea. In this regard, the significance of the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea, signed by the heads of the five coastal states in August 2018, is highlighted. This document was the result of multilateral interaction and the beginning of a new stage of cooperation in the Caspian Sea, including in the energy sector.

It is also important to note that during the official visit of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to Azerbaijan in August 2017, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the governments of Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan on the further development of cooperation in the energy sector. This document contributed to the promotion of energy cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting was also attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov and Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Aziz oglu Bayramov.

Following the talks between the heads of state, the heads of the foreign affairs agencies signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the governments of Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan on joint exploration, development and development of hydrocarbon resources of the “Dostluk” field in the Caspian Sea.

"This document is the result of many years of work carried out by our countries aimed at strengthening cooperation and mutual understanding in the energy sector, unlocking the huge mutual potential of the two largest energy powers, creating the most favorable conditions in the Caspian Sea region for the development of sustainable energy, broad and mutually beneficial international partnership." - said President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

The Presidents congratulated each other on the signing of a historically important document designed to expand the partnership between the two states in the field of energy.

Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov stressed that the decision to name this hydrocarbon field in the Caspian Sea - "Dostluk" - was a mutual decision. "Dostluk" in translation from the Turkmen and Azeri languages means friendship.
