Romania, due to its membership in the European Union, geographical location and participation in strategic regional energy projects, can provide long-term opportunities for Turkmen energy resources to enter the European market. Trend reports, it is said in a statement of the Ministry of Economy, Energy and Business Environment of Romania.

- The Southern Gas Corridor (SGC) is of particular importance for the energy diversification of the European Union, and Turkmenistan among natural gas suppliers can make an important contribution to the SGC project, - the ministry said.

“We must not forget that Turkmenistan ranks fourth in the world in terms of natural gas reserves after the Russian Federation, Iran and Qatar,” the ministry says. “At present, gas volumes from Azerbaijan are the main source of supplies for the project, but at the next stages of development  the project will consider other sources of supply, such as Turkmenistan, terminals of liquefied natural gas in Greece and others”.

The participation of Romania and Turkmenistan in the V ministerial meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council, organized in February in Baku, testifies to the support of the two countries for this project, the ministry said.

The report also says that the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline project was included in the latest list of projects of common interest of the European Commission, thereby obtaining strategic status.

Romania has supported the SGC project from the very beginning and is interested in being part of this transport infrastructure at its future stages of development and having access to those volumes of gas that will be transported through this infrastructure, including potential gas volumes from Turkmenistan, is specified in  message.

It was also noted that in June 2019, representatives of the Romanian energy sector and government agencies paid an official visit to Turkmenistan.
