Turkmenistan and Iran discussed the issue of direct supplies of Turkmen gas to Iran, as well as transit to third countries. This was announced by Vice-Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Minister of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov at a government meeting held on May 23.

As TDH reports, the Vice-Chairman said that during the 18th meeting of the Intergovernmental Turkmen-Iranian Commission on Economic Cooperation, recently held in Tehran, the prospects for Turkmen-Iranian cooperation in the gas sector were discussed, in particular, regarding direct supplies of Turkmen "blue fuel" to Iran, its transit through Iranian territory to third countries, including under the SWAP scheme.

Meredov also noted that the parties discussed the possibility of expanding interstate partnership in the electric power industry. In this context, the issues of implementing the project of the Turkmen section of the Mary-Mashhad power transmission line, and the further supply of Turkmen electricity to Iran were considered.

According to the Vice-Chairman, during the meeting, attention was also paid to cooperation in the transport sector, including the 242 km long Gumdag-Etrek-Iranian border highway project. Along with this, an agreement was reached on increasing transport and cargo flows between the two countries.

Emphasis was also placed on the prospects for intensifying partnership in the area of ??trade and business structures. In particular, an agreement was reached on preparing a Work Plan for 2026-2028 in order to intensify trade and economic ties and further increase trade turnover.

Following the 18th meeting of the Intergovernmental Turkmen-Iranian Commission on Economic Cooperation, a corresponding protocol was signed.

After hearing the report, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov noted that Iran is a neighboring state with which Turkmenistan closely cooperates. “The key role in the implementation of the agreements reached between the two countries is assigned to the joint Intergovernmental Turkmen-Iranian Commission on Economic Cooperation,” said the head of state, instructing the Vice-Chairman and Minister of Foreign Affairs to continue work on developing relations with Iran and strengthening trade and economic partnership.
