Turkmenistan is actively promoting the electrification of transport as part of the implementation of the program to decarbonize the economy. This was reported at the First Ministerial Forum of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) on Sustainable Development, held in the "smart" city of Arkadag.

"An example of the effective implementation of the electrification program is the successful introduction of public electric buses and electric taxis in the new city of Arkadag. In parallel, the charging infrastructure is being developed, ensuring its availability for users of electric transport," Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan Babaniyaz Yallakov said at the forum.

He noted that the adaptation of transport systems to climate change is a priority area for the development of Turkmenistan's transport infrastructure.

Yallakov emphasized that environmental protection, the fight against climate change and the rational use of natural resources are considered by the leadership of Turkmenistan as global challenges requiring international cooperation.

"The state policy in this area provides for strengthening international cooperation and implementing new environmental projects," the deputy minister said.

The first ECO Ministerial Forum on Sustainable Development was held in the smart city of Arkadag on April 28-29. The goal of the forum is to promote partnership for the implementation of the "2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development" in the ECO region, and to develop common approaches to solving pressing problems of our time.

The two-day forum brought together heads and representatives of government agencies of the ECO member states, international organizations, diplomatic missions accredited in Turkmenistan, as well as ministries and industry departments of Turkmenistan.

ECO is an intergovernmental regional organization established in 1985 by Iran, Pakistan and Turkey to encourage economic, technical and cultural cooperation among member states. Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan joined the ECO in 1992.
