Turkmen Foreign Minister and UN Special Representative for Afghanistan discussed progress in inter-Afghan talks

Vice-Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov on Tuesday held an online-meeting with the Special Representative of the Secretary General for Afghanistan, Head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) Deborah Lyons, the website of the Foreign Ministry of Turkmenistan reports.

Noting the high level of long-term cooperation of Turkmenistan with UNAMA, the sides stated positive results and strengthening of regional cooperation on the way to ensuring security, stability and socio-economic development of Afghanistan.

The interlocutors noted the important actions of the government of Turkmenistan, in particular, to promote the construction of the TAPI gas pipeline, power transmission lines and fiber-optic communication Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan, the development of railway communication, which is designed to have a beneficial effect on world economic relations in the Eurasian space as a whole.

The progress of the inter-Afghan talks was considered separately. The sides expressed their hope for a positive outcome of this process to restore peace in Afghanistan. The talks were launched in Doha in September this year. Meredov confirmed the readiness of the Turkmen side to provide political space for future rounds of negotiations.

The sides stressed the importance of rendering assistance to Afghanistan in the process of internal and external economic integration. In this context, the importance of the development of social, energy, transport and communication infrastructure was noted.

Noting the importance of strengthening trust and mutual understanding between the countries and peoples of the world, the parties exchanged views on possible joint initiatives, in particular, for 2021, declared the Year of International Peace and Trust at the UN level at the initiative of Turkmenistan.
