Turkmenistan intends to begin natural gas supplies to Afghanistan via the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline by early 2027. This was announced by Muhammetmyrat Amanov, General Director of TAPI Pipeline Company Limited, at the International Conference and Exhibition "Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan - 2025”.
"Regarding the pipeline section in Afghanistan, our plan, our goal, is to complete construction work by the end of next year and begin gas supplies by the end of next year or early 2027," Amanov said.
He also reported on the progress of negotiations with Pakistan to conclude key agreements necessary for the project's implementation. "We are working to ensure Pakistan's participation in concluding key agreements that will protect future investments and provide confidence to investors and financial institutions, including all government agencies, gas transportation agencies, and other necessary agreements," the project operator noted.
Amanov added that negotiations are nearing completion, with more than 90% of the work completed. This phase is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2026.
The Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline is designed to transport up to 33 billion cubic meters of gas annually from Turkmenistan's Galkynysh field. Turkmenistan completed its section and prepared it for operation in 2024.
In September 2024, construction began on the 153-kilometer-long Serhetabat-Herat section of the pipeline in Afghanistan, known as "Arkadagyň Ak ýoly."
On October 21, National Leader of the Turkmen People Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov symbolically launched the new phase of construction of the Afghan section of the TAPI gas pipeline.
