On Remembrance Day, October 6, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov took part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Halk Hakydasy Memorial Complex, a memorial to the victims of the 1948 Ashgabat earthquake, as well as to national heroes who fell on the battlefields of all wars, TDH reports.

On Remembrance Day, sadaqahs are given throughout the country, prayers are offered for the repose of the souls of the heroes of the Fatherland, and memorial rites are performed. Remembrance of the past, commemoration of the brave defenders of the Motherland and the victims of natural disasters is one of the humane traditions of the Turkmen people.

Serdar Berdimuhamedov laid a wreath at the Ruhy Tagzym monument, paying tribute to those who perished in the 1948 Ashgabat earthquake. Tragic memories of one of the most devastating earthquakes in Ashgabat, the 1948 earthquake, still fill the hearts of Turkmen citizens with grief. The disaster destroyed the entire city and its surroundings in an instant, claiming the lives of thousands of residents. Also killed that night was the head of state's great-grandfather, Berdimuhamed Annayev, a hero who demonstrated heroism on the battlefields of the 1941-1945 war and a teacher who dedicated his life to educating young people.

The president also laid wreaths at the foot of the monuments erected in honor of the Turkmen soldiers who fell in the battle against fascism and the heroes who died fighting for the freedom of the Fatherland and the happiness of future generations.

Then wreaths and bouquets of flowers were laid by the Speaker of the Mejlis, members of the government, heads of military and law enforcement agencies, diplomatic missions accredited in Turkmenistan, and international organizations. They were joined by leaders and representatives of political parties and public organizations, ministries and agencies, elders, and youth.

Commemorative ceremonies were also held in Arkadag and throughout the country's regions.
