Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and the President of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian discussed the development of cooperation in the fuel and energy and transport sectors during a telephone conversation on February 10, TDH reports.

Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov proposed to organize the next meeting of the Joint Turkmen-Iranian Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation in the near future. In this regard, the advisability of including in the agenda of the meeting issues of increasing bilateral partnership in the field of energy, transport, industry and other areas was emphasized.

Our countries have been cooperating in the fuel and energy sector for many years now,” the Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty said and announced the agreement with the BOTAŞ company on the transit of Turkmen natural gas through Iran to Turkey via SWAP. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov also reported that in order to increase cooperation in the field of electric power engineering, Turkmenistan proposed to build a section from the Mary hydroelectric power station to the Iranian border under the Mary-Mashhad power transmission line project.

In this regard, it was noted that the necessary negotiations had already been held with the Iranian side and a corresponding document had been signed, stipulating that the project would be implemented by Iranian companies.

Transport was also named among the main areas of bilateral cooperation. As noted, Turkmenistan and Iran occupy an advantageous geographical position at the junction of Asia and Europe, between the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf, which opens the way for both countries to have a very constructive partnership in the transport and logistics sector.

In this regard, the importance of the highway, which will be built from the Iranian border to the city of Gumdag in Turkmenistan, was emphasized. A Memorandum was signed between the parties for the implementation of this project, the contractor of which will be an Iranian company. It was proposed to give instructions to the relevant government agencies and companies to implement the project. During the conversation, the interlocutors also noted the existence of enormous prospects for increasing trade turnover, which they proposed to use to the maximum.
