Turkmenistan has prepared drafts of a Roadmap and a Comprehensive Plan of Measures to achieve the goals of the Global Methane Pledge. This was announced by Vice-Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov during a government meeting held on October 1.
In this context, the initiative to interact with the global community to reduce methane emissions was highlighted. As Meredov noted, at the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-28), held in Dubai (UAE) from November 30 to December 12, 2023, Turkmenistan officially announced its joining the Global Methane Pledge (GMP).
Based on this, a draft Roadmap for strengthening Turkmenistan's international cooperation to achieve the goals and objectives of the GMP for 2025-2026 has been prepared, the Vice-Chairman noted. The Roadmap confirms Turkmenistan's goals of reducing methane emissions by 2030 through a fundamental modernization of the energy sector and the implementation of appropriate measures.
Rashid Meredov noted that to implement the Roadmap, close cooperation is planned with authoritative international organizations, in particular, with the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, other specialized agencies of the Organization, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and the Islamic Development Bank.
To implement the Roadmap, a Comprehensive Plan of Measures to reduce methane emissions in 2025-2026 is also planned. These include: holding scientific and practical conferences, round tables, and seminars jointly with various international organizations, cooperating with foreign companies to solve the tasks set in this area, developing feasibility studies for projects for processing and using associated gas through the introduction of innovative and energy-saving technologies, and others.
In this context, drafts of the Roadmap and the Complex of Measures for its implementation were presented for consideration by the head of state.
Having listened to the report, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov emphasized the need to further increase Turkmenistan's contribution to global efforts to reduce methane emissions, and to continue active cooperation with foreign partners and international organizations in this area.
