President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov led a mass bike ride that took place on Monday in Ashgabat to celebrate World Bicycle Day.

Thousands of action participants started early in the morning from the Bicycle monument location.  Members of the Cabinet of Ministers and the Mejlis of Turkmenistan, heads and employees of government agencies, representatives of public organizations, employees of diplomatic missions and international organizations accredited in Turkmenistan took part in the mass bike ride.

Serdar Berdimuhamedov led the column, which moved along Bitarap Turkmenistan Avenue towards the center of the capital.  Along the route, the action participants were greeted by pop soloists and creative groups with musical, dance and folklore performances.

Today, the central media of Turkmenistan published a congratulatory address from the President of Turkmenistan to his compatriots on the occasion of World Bicycle Day, in which the head of state emphasized that this holiday was proclaimed by a resolution of the UN General Assembly at the proposal of Turkmenistan.

“The significant date itself occupies a special place in the national calendar as a symbol of the triumph of the ideals of friendship and peace, sports and humanism, as well as the unity and solidarity of our society.  Following the ideological message of World Bicycle Day, we solemnly celebrate this holiday together with members of the world community,” noted in the message of Serdar Berdimuhamedov.

“Our country has appreciated the benefits of cycling and its positive impact on the environment.  The number of those involved in this sport is consistently growing, since today the physical and sports activity of citizens of various age categories, especially youth, is more important than ever,” the President of Turkmenistan emphasized.

The head of state also said that “in independent neutral Turkmenistan, a cycling marathon was organized for the first time on the Mary-Tedjen-Ashgabat section of the Ashgabat-Turkmenabat highway.  This event, which takes place from May 31 to June 3, 2024, is of great importance, including in the development of cycling”.

World Bicycle Day is also celebrated in many countries around the world, where sports and entertainment themed events are held on June 3.  Embassies of Turkmenistan abroad initiated mass bicycle rides with the participation of Turkmen and foreign diplomats, leaders of public and sports organizations, youth, including students from our country studying at foreign universities.
