Bayram Velhanov, a lecturer at the Department of Industrial Ecology of the Faculty of Chemical Technology and Ecology at the Yagshygeldi Kakayev International Oil and Gas University, is studying in a master's programme at the University of Tsukuba (Japan) and carrying out research in the field of hydrogen energy. His studies abroad are part of the «SDGs Global Leader» programme implemented by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The master's programme will run until 31 March 2029. Together with scientists and specialists of the University of Tsukuba, the lecturer will conduct scientific research on producing hydrogen energy from natural gas and on sustainable development systems. In addition, he will study Japan's accumulated experience in the fields of ecology, sustainable energy and clean technologies, and will take part in theoretical and practical classes in the relevant areas.
For the purpose of joint research in the field of hydrogen energy and the development of environmentally friendly and sustainable energy technologies, on 7 April of this year the Yagshygeldi Kakayev International Oil and Gas University was assigned to carry out the tasks arising from the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan and the University of Tsukuba, one of Japan's leading higher education institutions, on cooperation in joint scientific research on hydrogen energy. The faculty of the higher education institution is successfully carrying out this work.
In accordance with the Action Plan of the «Roadmap for the Development of International Cooperation of Turkmenistan in the Field of Hydrogen Energy for 2022–2023», approved by a Resolution of the President of Turkmenistan, a Hydrogen Energy Center was established at the Yagshygeldi Kakayev International Oil and Gas University. Its work plan, agreed with the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan and approved, has been successfully fulfilled.
During research at the Hydrogen Energy Center on producing hydrogen fuel from water by electrolysis, green hydrogen fuel was successfully obtained. For the first time, the Center's specialists created a laboratory stand for producing hydrogen fuel from natural gas using an innovative plasma-chemical method. The hydrogen fuel obtained by this method was analyzed on an Agilent Technologies 6890 gas chromatograph. The analysis showed that pure hydrogen and carbon black were obtained from natural gas, which, as noted, fully proves that the method can be classed among innovative zero-emission technologies.
