At the OGT 2026 forum, the TAPI Pipeline Company reported significant progress on the Serhetabat–Herat section of the project: the pipeline has reached the vicinity of Herat, with commissioning scheduled for the end of 2026.
According to the company, approximately 150.7 km of the route has been prepared, and 124 km of pipe has been welded and laid – accounting for roughly 80% of the route. Hydraulic testing is currently underway on certain sections.
The company noted that the project’s resource base was strengthened in April with the launch of the fourth phase of the Galkynyş gas field, which provides additional capacity to produce 10 billion cubic meters of marketable gas a year.
Attention is also being directed toward gas demand in Afghanistan. Turkmen and Afghan authorities have identified priority projects for the Herat region, including the construction of a main gas pipeline to the Herat industrial park, the establishment of gas distribution stations, the gasification of industrial zones and the construction of a compressed natural gas (CNG) production facility. Furthermore, a private investor has proposed building a gas-fired power plant near Herat.
Key priorities for the near term include completing pipe laying, trench backfilling, testing the construction of crossings and the installation of a gas metering station by 2026. Additional tasks involve finalizing remaining legal and commercial agreements with Afghanistan, supporting the implementation of projects in Herat and expanding programs focused on reducing methane emissions and introducing digital monitoring systems.
The company emphasized that coordinating plans for the development of energy and railway infrastructure will help reduce costs, enhance the security of the corridor and accelerate overall infrastructure development. The TAPI project is viewed as a large-scale regional initiative intended to foster industrial growth, the transition to greener energy sources and long-term market development.
