The parliament of Turkmenistan has defined date of presidential elections on February 12, 2017

Another election of the president of Turkmenistan will take place on February 12, 2017. This date is defined in the resolution "About Calling of An Election of the President of Turkmenistan" which was adopted by People's Deputies at the sixteenth meeting of national parliament - Majlis of Turkmenistan of the fifth convocation, taken place on Saturday.

It is remarkable that three parties will for the first time participate in this campaign, except the Democratic Party of Turkmenistan, the Party of industrialists and businessmen and Agrarian party will also participate in it.

Questions of preparation for the election of the president of Turkmenistan which is coming in 2017 were discussed at a meeting of the Central Electoral Commission and observers from parties of the country on September 30. National observers – representatives of Democratic party, Party of industrialists and businessmen, Agrarian party, public organizations and associations of the country, and also media - participated in work of the meeting.

At the meeting need of studying of foreign experience in area of the organization of selective procedures, carrying out on a systematic basis of joint meetings, consultations, educational seminars and "round tables" with participation of foreign experts were emphasized.

The president Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov at the joint meeting of the government and State Council of safety which took place on September 15 declared that "already now it is necessary to begin preparation for presidential elections of 2017". Then the head of state emphasized that "this important social and political event has to take place at the high level, on a wide democratic and alternative basis with participation of several candidates".

Speaking on September 14 at a meeting of the Council of Elders at which new edition of the Constitution of the country was approved, the head of state declared that three parties would for the first time participate in presidential elections of 2017: Democratic, Party of industrialists and businessmen and Agrarian party of the country. At the same time the President emphasized need to give to each candidate an opportunity to run for presidency of Turkmenistan from political parties or groups of citizens.

In the text of new edition of the Constitution of Turkmenistan it is said that "The citizen of Turkmenistan who was born in Turkmenistan can be elected the president of Turkmenistan if the citizen isn't younger than forty years, know the state language, within the previous fifteen years had constantly lived and worked in Turkmenistan".

In the Basic law it is also noted that the President of Turkmenistan is elected directly by the people of Turkmenistan for a period of seven years and enters a position from the moment of bringing of the oath by him.

Presidential elections are held on the basis of a general and equal electoral right. The citizens of Turkmenistan who have reached eighteen-year age have a right to vote, each voter has one voice, that is noted in the Constitution of Turkmenistan.
