The Academic forum held with assistance of OSCE is directed to assistance to economic cooperation with Afghanistan

Representatives of government structures, diplomats and also experts of research institutes and economic sectors from the countries of Central, Southern and Southwest Asia participated in the Academic forum organized last week with assistance of OSCE within the Seventh conference of regional economic cooperation on Afghanistan (RECCA VII). It is reported on the website of the OSCE Center in Ashgabat.

This important action was organized by the Center of strategic researches of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan in partnership with Institute of the international relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and the OSCE Center in Ashgabat.

Within the forum opportunities and new tools for further strengthening of a regional cooperation in Central, Southern and Southwest Asia were discussed. As it is noted, speakers raised such questions as strengthening of a regional cooperation in the field of power, assessment of regional and interregional interaction and also potential for regional trade and assistance to transit.

Participants of the forum exchanged opinions on how regional initiatives and projects can promote regional security and stability and also discussed new spheres of economic cooperation and integration in the region with the emphasis on a role of Afghanistan.

"OSCE makes continuing efforts for the purpose of assistance to Afghanistan by means of various initiatives, and the OSCE Center gave support in the organization of this action within the off-budget project directed to promotion of dialogue on development of regional infrastructure between participants of the Istanbul process famous also as "Heart of Asia" in Ashgabat, - the head of the OSCE Center in Ashgabat Natalya Drozd told.

According to her, "the held forum gave an excellent opportunity for deepening of dialogue on strengthening of economic cooperation across Afghanistan between various international, regional and national partners".

It is provided that results of the Academic forum will form a basis for discussions during the main forum and meetings of the working group RECCA VII which are planned to be held in Ashgabat in November, 2017.

Since 2005, the Conference of regional economic cooperation on Afghanistan (RECCA) serves as the leading platform for cross-border economic dialogue, enforcement of trust and acceptance of actions in Central, Southern and Southwest Asia.

The Academic forum is the platform for scientists, analysts and political figures from various countries of the region for discussion of opportunities and challenges and also developments of measures for elimination of the factors interfering an economic cooperation in this extensive region.

During telephone conversation which was carried out by Presidents of Turkmenistan and Afghanistan last week, Mohammad Ashraf Ghani said that the large-scale investment projects realized in fuel and energy and transport spheres were designed to play a huge role in peace-making and stability in his homeland. It, first of all, is the construction of the gas pipeline of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI). This highway, on which long-term supply of the Turkmen natural gas to the largest countries of Southeast Asia will be performed, will give a powerful impulse to economic development of all region, will allow to create thousands of workplaces.

As the President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said, "our country intends and take the most active part in international efforts on revival of the neighboring Afghanistan from now on and to render feasible assistance in recovery of its social and economic infrastructure, supporting by that the Afghan people in its aspiration to peaceful and safe life".
